Tip Calculator

Calculate a user-entered tip, tax method, total, and per-person arithmetic without a tipping recommendation.

Enter the values and review the result.

User-entered tip arithmetic

No percentage is preselected or recommended. Required fields use strict whole-number or decimal input.

Enter tip details, then calculate.

Formula and transparent derivation

Tax is zero, the entered amount, or subtotal multiplied by the entered tax rate divided by 100. Tip base is subtotal before tax or subtotal plus tax after tax.

Tip = tip base x entered tip rate / 100. Final total = subtotal + tax + tip. Tip and total per person divide their respective unrounded amounts by the whole people count.

These are elementary arithmetic identities. No external service, regional rule, or recommendation changes the formula.

Worked example

A user enters a USD 100.00 subtotal, an 8% tax rate, an after-tax tip basis, a 15% tip rate, and 4 people. Every value and the basis are illustrative user entries, not recommendations.

Tax = 100 x 8 / 100 = USD 8.00. Tip base = 100 + 8 = USD 108.00. Tip = 108 x 15 / 100 = USD 16.20.

Total = 100 + 8 + 16.2 = USD 124.20. Total per person = 124.2 / 4 = USD 31.05. Raw copy: USD 31.05 per person.

Assumptions and limitations

All bill, tax, tip, basis, and people values come from the user. This tool does not recommend a tip, validate tax law, interpret service charges or gratuity rules, or account for local customs. It does not settle payments. Independently rounded display amounts can differ by a cent when recombined, although internal arithmetic is not rounded early.

Accuracy and limitations

Calzivo tools are built for practical estimates, conversions, and checks. Some tools use standard formulas or simplified assumptions, and results can be affected by input accuracy, rounding, units, local rules, or changing official requirements.

Results depend on the values you enter and any simplified assumptions used by the tool. Verify important results before making decisions or submitting official information.

How to Use This Tool

Use these steps to enter the right inputs and interpret the result correctly.

1

2

Choose no tax, an entered tax amount, or an entered tax rate.

3

Choose a before-tax or after-tax tip basis, then enter your own tip rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Tip Calculator and how to read the result.

Does this calculator recommend a tip percentage?

No. The tip rate is entirely user-entered. The calculator performs arithmetic without judging local customs or service.

Can the tip be based before or after tax?

Yes. Before tax uses the subtotal as the tip base. After tax uses subtotal plus the entered or calculated tax.

Does it validate the tax or gratuity rules?

No. It does not determine tax law, service-charge treatment, automatic gratuities, or local requirements.

Why might displayed amounts differ by a cent when recombined?

Each displayed amount is rounded to cents independently, while the calculation keeps full internal precision until display.
