What the Split Bill Calculator Does
This split bill calculator divides a restaurant bill equally or unevenly, then adds tax, tip, and optional service charge. It shows per-person totals so a group can settle a check more clearly.
Split Bill Formula
Equal split: Total per person = (Subtotal + Tax + Tip) / Number of people.
Uneven split: person share % = person subtotal / group subtotal. Person tax = total tax x share %. Person tip = total tip x share %. Person total = subtotal + tax + tip.
Equal Split vs Uneven Split
Use equal split when the meal was mostly shared or everyone ordered similar amounts. Use uneven split when people ordered different meals, drinks, or extras and you want tax and tip allocated by each person subtotal.
How to Split a Bill With Tip
First calculate the tip from the subtotal, then add tax and any separate service charge. Divide the total equally or proportionally based on each person subtotal. If a service charge is already included, check whether you still want to add a separate tip.
Tip Before or After Tax
Some people tip before tax, while others tip after tax for convenience. This calculator uses the subtotal for tip calculations so the split remains transparent. If you want to tip after tax, include that extra amount in the tip percentage or use the Tip Calculator.
Examples
- Equal split: a $100 subtotal, $8 tax, and 20% tip totals $128. Split by 4 people, each pays $32.
- Uneven split: Alice orders $30 and Bob orders $70. Alice receives 30% of tax and tip; Bob receives 70%.
- With tax and tip: subtotal plus tax plus tip gives the full bill total before rounding between people.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting tax or tip before dividing the bill.
- Double-counting a service charge and a separate tip.
- Splitting uneven bills equally when people ordered very different amounts.
- Rounding too early instead of calculating the final total first.
- Forgetting shared appetizers, drinks, coupons, or comped items.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Split Bill Calculator and how to read the result.
How do I split a restaurant bill?
Add subtotal, tax, tip, and any separate service charge, then divide equally or allocate each cost by person subtotal.
How do I split a bill with tip?
Calculate the tip from the subtotal, add it to the bill with tax, then split the total equally or proportionally.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
Enter each person subtotal. The calculator assigns tax and tip proportionally based on each person share of the subtotal.
Should tax and tip be split equally or proportionally?
For equal splits, they are divided equally. For uneven splits, proportional allocation is usually clearer because each person pays based on what they ordered.
How do I split shared items?
Add shared items to each person subtotal manually. For example, split a $12 appetizer between two people by adding $6 to each person.
Is service charge the same as a tip?
Not always. Check the receipt or restaurant policy. If service charge is already included, avoid adding it again as a tip unless you intend to.
Can I enter custom person amounts?
Yes. Use uneven split mode and enter each person subtotal before tax and tip.
How should I round split bill totals?
Calculate the totals first, then round per-person payments to cents or to a convenient amount. One person may need to cover a cent difference.
