Paint calculator formula
Room walls: 2 × (length + width) × height. Single wall: width × height. Ceiling: length × width.
Net area = gross area − opening deductions. Coated area = net area × user-entered whole coats. Adjusted area = coated area + user-entered overage.
Required paint uses the selected product-label coverage. A container count, when entered, is one final upward rounding of the exact required paint volume.
Worked example
A user enters a 12 ft × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls, one 3 ft × 7 ft door, two 3 ft × 4 ft windows, two coats, 10% overage, 325 sq ft per US gal product-label coverage, 1 US gal containers, and USD 40.00 per container. These are illustrative user-entered values, not recommendations.
Gross wall area = 2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 352 sq ft. Opening deductions = (1 × 3 × 7) + (2 × 3 × 4) = 45 sq ft. Net paintable area = 352 − 45 = 307 sq ft.
Coated area = 307 × 2 = 614 sq ft. Overage area = 614 × 10 / 100 = 61.4 sq ft. Adjusted coated area = 614 + 61.4 = 675.4 sq ft.
Required paint = 675.4 / 325 = 2.078154 US gal. Required litres = 2.078153846… × 3.785411784 = 7.866668 L after display formatting. Containers = ceil(2.078153846… / 1) = 3. Cost = 3 × USD 40.00 = USD 120.00.
