Construction Calculators

Square Footage Calculator

Calculate square footage for rooms, walls, flooring, paint, concrete, gravel, and other material planning.

Project type

Calculate square footage for a floor, wall, multiple rooms, or irregular area sections.

Optional. Use 0 if not needed.

Optional material price.

Calculation assumptions

  • Area is converted to square feet first, then to square yards and square meters.
  • Cost is calculated from total area including waste and the selected cost unit.
  • Depth-based materials such as concrete, gravel, and sand need a separate depth or volume calculator.
  • A dedicated square-footage guide can be added later when that page exists.

Enter dimensions above to calculate square footage. You can also add waste percentage or cost to estimate material needs.

Choose a mode, enter measurements, and calculate to see area conversions and project totals.

Square footage formulas

Rectangle area = length x width.

Wall area = wall length x wall height x number of walls - door/window openings.

Total with waste = area x (1 + waste % / 100).

Cost = total area x cost per selected area unit.

Worked examples

A room that is 12 ft x 10 ft has an area of 120 sq ft.

A 10 ft x 8 ft wall is 80 sq ft. Subtract one 3 ft x 7 ft door, and the net wall area is 59 sq ft.

If a room is 120 sq ft and you add 10% waste, total planned area is 120 x 1.10 = 132 sq ft.

One square meter is about 10.7639 sq ft, so metric areas can be compared with US material pricing after conversion.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing feet and inches without converting first.
  • Forgetting to subtract doors and windows for wall area.
  • Not adding waste for flooring, paint, tile, or material cuts.
  • Using square feet when the supplier prices by square yard or square meter.
  • Rounding too early before adding rooms, sections, or waste.

Material planning note

Square footage is the starting point for many construction estimates. For materials that also need depth, use a related tool such as the Concrete Calculator, Gravel Calculator, or Sand Calculator.

Accuracy and limitations

Calzivo tools are built for practical estimates, conversions, and checks. Some tools use standard formulas or simplified assumptions, and results can be affected by input accuracy, rounding, units, local rules, or changing official requirements.

Construction estimates can vary with site conditions, waste, compaction, product coverage, local requirements, and measurement accuracy. Verify material orders before purchasing.

How to Use This Tool

Use these steps to enter the right inputs and interpret the result correctly.

1

Choose the mode that matches your project: room, wall, multiple rooms, or manual sections.

2

Enter dimensions using one unit per row, or enter known area sections for irregular spaces.

3

Optionally add waste percentage and cost per selected area unit.

4

Review square-foot conversions, waste, and estimated cost before ordering materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Square Footage Calculator and how to read the result.

How do I calculate square footage?

For a rectangular space, multiply length by width. If the dimensions are in feet, the result is square feet.

How do I calculate square footage for a wall?

Multiply wall length by wall height and the number of walls, then subtract door and window openings if you want net wall area.

How much extra square footage should I add for waste?

Many material projects add 5% to 15% waste, but the right amount depends on layout, cuts, pattern matching, breakage, and the material supplier.

How do I convert square feet to square yards?

Divide square feet by 9. For example, 180 sq ft is 20 sq yd.

Can I use this for flooring, paint, concrete, or gravel estimates?

Yes, it can help with area planning. For depth-based materials like concrete, gravel, and sand, use the related material calculators to convert area and depth into volume.
