Quick answer
In short
- Wake time: Add the exact entered duration to the sleep-start time.plan a sleep schedule
- Bedtime: Subtract the exact entered duration from the wake time and report any midnight rollover.
Scheduling arithmetic, not a sleep-cycle model
The Sleep Calculator adds or subtracts the exact duration entered. It does not divide time into fixed 90-minute cycles or attempt to predict REM or NREM stages. Sleep physiology involves changing stages and biological regulation; a clock calculation does not observe them.
Find a wake time
Enter a sleep-start time and duration in 24-hour HH:MM form. The tool adds duration minutes. For example, 22:30 + 07:30 = 06:00 next day. The next-day label means the date-free arithmetic crossed midnight.
Find a bedtime
Enter a wake time and subtract the intended duration. For example, 07:00 - 09:00 = 22:00 previous day. Valid clock times run from 00:00 through 23:59, while the accepted duration is 01:00 through 16:00.
Duration context is not a guarantee
The AASM and Sleep Research Society consensus says adults should generally sleep seven or more hours per night, while also recognizing individual context. That population guidance does not make one entered interval suitable for everyone. The calculator does not account for time to fall asleep, awakenings, schedule consistency, age-specific recommendations, health conditions, or medication.
What the result cannot show
A planned interval is not measured sleep. It cannot assess sleep quality, sleep stages, insomnia, sleep disorders, fatigue, or treatment needs, and it cannot guarantee that someone will fall asleep or wake at the calculated time. Seek qualified care for persistent sleep concerns.
