Compatible cooking-unit conversion

Three isolated conversion families
The volume family uses explicit US customary kitchen measures alongside millilitres and litres. The mass family uses grams, kilograms, and explicitly labelled avoirdupois ounces and pounds. The temperature family uses degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit. Source and target units must belong to the selected family, so a volume cannot accidentally be presented as a mass.
A US fluid ounce is a volume unit. An avoirdupois ounce is a mass unit. Similar words do not make them interchangeable. Imperial fluid measures, metric cups, Australian tablespoons, Kelvin, gas marks, and fan-versus-conventional oven adjustments are outside this converter.
Exact unit foundations
The US volume table derives from one US liquid gallon equalling exactly 231 cubic inches and 128 US fluid ounces. One US cup is eight US fluid ounces, one US tablespoon is one sixteenth of a cup, and one US teaspoon is one third of a tablespoon. With the exact international inch definition, one US gallon is 3.785411784 litres.
The international avoirdupois pound equals exactly 0.45359237 kilogram, and one avoirdupois ounce is one sixteenth of that pound. Metric prefixes provide 1000 millilitres per litre and 1000 grams per kilogram. The calculator stores one coherent base factor per unit instead of separate rounded forward and inverse tables.
Worked examples
Volume: 1 US cup × 0.2365882365 litres per cup × 1000 millilitres per litre = 236.5882365 mL, displayed as 236.588237 mL.
Mass: 16 oz (avdp) × 0.028349523125 kilograms per ounce × 1000 grams per kilogram = 453.59237 g.
Temperature: 180 °C × 9 / 5 + 32 = 356 °F. The inverse calculation is (F − 32) × 5 / 9.
Assumptions and limitations
Zero is valid for volume and mass, and signed temperature input is allowed down to absolute zero. Values are not trimmed, clamped, or partially parsed. Results retain internal precision until deterministic six-decimal display formatting.
This tool makes no ingredient-density assumption and cannot make a universal cups-to-grams conversion. Ingredient density can vary with ingredient identity, packing, moisture, temperature, and measuring technique. Celsius/Fahrenheit arithmetic also does not guarantee identical appliance behavior or cooking results. Verify recipe conventions and practical settings for the recipe and equipment you use.
Scaling versus converting

Can this convert cups to grams?
No. Cups measure volume and grams measure mass. Their relationship changes with ingredient density, packing, moisture, and measuring method.
Are cups and spoons US definitions?
Yes. The volume family explicitly uses US teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, fluid ounces, liquid pints, liquid quarts, and liquid gallons.
Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce of mass?
No. US fluid ounces measure volume. Avoirdupois ounces measure mass, so they appear in different families.
Does a converted oven temperature guarantee the same result?
